As most of you know I home cook for Kirby and Kenzie. They do get a very small handful of kibble in the morning when I have to leave for work. When we travel I purchase foods that are easy to carry and serve always from a company I trust.
The Simple Food Project recently sent us samples of all three flavors which I used for their morning kibble. This brand impressed me enough that I plan to use their food for both the morning kibble and when we travel.
What Is The Simple Food Project?
This is the most transparent dog food company I have encountered. You know who the holistic veterinarian is, you know she wanted to create healthy food for dogs, you know the ingredients they use, you know the cooking process they use, you know they started as a home delivery service, you know they use real food!
Want to know exactly what’s in that box you just purchased? They have a Lot Lookup on their website! They follow food energetics which is why their formulas are warming, neutral and cooling. Kirby is hot natured in the summer so cooling foods are best for him. In the winter he likes the warming foods. Kenzie stays pretty neutral year round.
To date they have three recipes using human-grade ingredients sourced in the USA and made in their facility in Wisconsin. It’s grain-free, limited ingredient, raw, without any added artificial flavors, dyes, preservatives, or synthetic vitamins and minerals. Each recipe is developed by a holistic veterinarian then crafted in small batches. Finally, they don’t cook any of the ingredients at high temperatures which destroy the natural vitamins, minerals, and flavors.
Hmm, exactly what I cook in my own kitchen! Well almost. A blend of meat-based proteins, organ meats (liver and hearts), fruits (apples and cranberries), veggies (green beans and peas), seeds, legumes, and spices are freeze dried pasteurized at a low temperature and crumbled into little nuggets which means around 97% of the vitamins and minerals are maintained. But they don’t stop there. They also dry roast and crumble into little nuggets the same blend of meat-based proteins, fruits, veggies, and a few seeds, legumes, and spices which gives that crunchy texture Kirby loves.
What Are The Ingredients?

It takes 5 lbs of fresh food to make a 1.5 lb box, 10 lbs of fresh food to make a 3 lb box, and 20 lbs of fresh food to make a 6 lb box.
What Did Kirby & Kenzie Think?
I had pictures and a video but my phone was stolen so you’ll just have to trust me when I say I have no idea which flavors are their favorites since they scarfed down each and every recipe I gave them. It smells fresh, there’s a crunch they like, and its easy clean-up since they licked the plates clean.
It is a bit on the expensive side but feeding real food will save you on the vet bills. Kirby, at 9 years old, has rarely been ill. Kenzie is only 2 years old and healthy as a horse. Both have a ton of energy. It’s all from eating wholesome, real food! Home cooking is the best but this is the next best thing. Use it for meals, toppings, or treats.
Thinking about it but not sure? They have 1 oz. sample boxes of each recipe for only $2.48 or a 3-pack bundle for only $6.99
