Coconut Oil & Honey Duo

Do you feed your pup coconut oil and raw honey on a daily basis? You should. It's recommended up to a teaspoon of coconut oil per 10 lbs of weight and roughly a teaspoon a day of raw honey.

Kirby and Kenzie each receive a little coconut oil and raw honey nearly every day as preventatives. Sometimes I add it to their meals, sometimes they get frozen bites, sometimes they lick it off the spoon.

I had just gotten over the flu which developed into bronchitis. A hacking, terribly uncomfortable deep in my chest cough that my cough medicine was barely relieving. I began taking a spoonful of raw honey several times a day which helped but when I mixed it with the coconut oil, the results were amazingly fast. Why have I not been mixing these two ingredients together before now?

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants and contains lauric acid which is anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Antibiotics are not effective in treating viruses but the lauric acid and monolaurin in coconut oil has been known to destroy viruses since at least the 1960s. It can be used to help prevent colds by boosting the immune system or, once the cold does is set in, it can help reduce the length of the cold. Be sure it's unrefined, virgin or pure coconut oil. So why do I feed my dogs coconut oil every day? Read this to learn more.

You want raw local honey which it turns out is just as effective in helping a cough as over the counter cough medicine since it contains powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. In fact, honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial and viral diseases. So a mere serving a day can prevent colds, reduce current colds, and alleviate allergies by strengthening the immune system.

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup raw honey

  1. Place the coconut oil in a small bowl and whip until melted. You can place it in the microwave a few seconds or in a bowl of warm water if needed to melt it.
  2. Add the honey and whisk until completely blended.
  3. Pour the mixture into a mason jar and store in the cabinet or into silicone molds and freeze.

Kirby and Kenzie like the flavor and texture of equal amounts of coconut oil and honey (I do too) but you may want to start with 1/2 cup of honey and work up to 1 cup to find the best consistency and flavor.

Raw unprocessed honey is very thick compared to mass marketed honey

Sometimes I'll freeze little bites in coffee bean silicone molds but mostly I keep my mixture in a mason jar in the cabinet. Don't place it in the refrigerator or the coconut oil will harden. If it does, place the jar in warm water to melt the coconut oil. It will keep indefinitely.
