Who Is CANIDAE?
CANIDAE is a 100% family owned and operated company with their own research & development center and manufacturing facility, Ethos Pet Nutrition, located in Brownwood, Texas.
These pioneers in natural and holistic pet foods continue to raise the bar to create foods and treats that are nutritious and delicious with specially selected ingredients blended together in precise recipes. The company logo says it all: A Healthier Today for a Longer Tomorrow™
The CANIDAE Foundation is fully involved in the community with participation in major events helping and celebrating dogs along with their blog supporting pet ownership.
What Sets Them Apart?
What impressed me the most was when I watched the slideshow tour of their manufacturing process at their plant. In this day of ongoing recalls I appreciate the stringent care they take to insure the safety of our pets.
All CANIDAE products are made in the United States at USDA, FDA, and AAFCO approved facilities and are preserved naturally. The meats and meals used originate from USDA inspected meats. They further require:
- Certificates of safety and ingredient quality are required from every supplier.
- Ingredients are tested onsite before allowing them into the facility.
- Each batch of food is tested throughout the process.
- Composite samples of “Test & Hold” batches from finished bags are sent to the onsite laboratory where a new battery of quality and safety tests are conducted including an advanced salmonella-specific test.
- Pallets of food are only released for shipment after lab personnel have certified the product has passed stringent quality and safety guidelines.
CANIDAE carries two lines of dog food and treats for dogs. They also carry two lines for cats.
Life Stages makes it easy for multi dog or cat families with recipes for all breeds, ages, and sizes. The six dry choices, six canned choices, and two treat choices are made with high quality protein sources and a nutritious blend of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and herbs without fillers, antibiotics, artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.
Grain Free PURE comes in four adult formulas (Elements, Land, Sky, or Sea) with your choice of dry kibble or canned and two treat choices. These are perfect for dogs of all breeds and sizes with food sensitivities. The simple gluten free recipes use only 7–10 key ingredients with fresh meat or fish as the first ingredient and whole foods like sweet potato, peas, and chickpeas. No corn, wheat, soy, antibiotics, hormones, or fillers
An added bonus for the dry kibble is what they dub HealthPLUS Solutions in Every Bite™, a trio of powerful nutrition applied to the kibble after cooking that includes probiotics for healthy digestion, antioxidants for a healthy immune system, and omega 6&3 for beautiful skin and coat.
What Are The Ingredients?
We received two bags of the treats so that’s what I want to focus on here.
The first bag we received were the Grain Free PURE Heaven Biscuits which contain Salmon, Potato, Pea Flour, Sweet Potato, Cane Molasses, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Salt, Natural Flavor, Cinnamon, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and Quinoa.
The second bag we received were the Life Stages Bakery Snacks with lamb, wild rice, and sweet potato which contain Brown Rice, Pea Flour, Lamb, Wild Rice, Sweet Potato, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), and Natural Flavor.
What Did Kirby Think?
He loved the crunchy Pure Heaven biscuits which makes sense to me since they smelled fishy and contained both salmon and cinnamon, two of his favorite flavors! It didn’t matter if I broke one in half or not, he happily ate it. He didn’t particularly care for the powdery crunchy Life Stage Bakery snack which had no smell. I did however pass the bag along to friends whose large dog enjoyed them.
I like the short list of ingredients which, other than the pea flour) I use in my kitchen for Kirby’s treats and meals. The biscuits are large (1 ¾”) but can easily be snapped in half so they work well for both large and small dogs. I think they are too large for a training treat but a good size for now and then. Sometimes I give Kirby a crunchy treat with his meal so these work great for that.
Dog Food Advisor rates CANIDAE Pure kibble 5 stars so the treats would fare as well. I checked and chewy.com has both on sale for just $6.99 for 30 - 40 plus treats per bag.
